How Ozempic Is Changing Diabetes Treatment
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Day in and day out, she carefully calibrated the doses needed to keep her Type 2 diabetes in check. “Every meal, and every morning and every night — it controls your life,” she said. In late 2021, she started on the diabetes drug Ozempic. She still uses a continuous glucose monitor to track her blood sugar, meticulously watching for slumps and spikes — but even as she took less insulin, she said, Ozempic has helped keep her glucose levels more under control. Millions of Americans rely on some form of insulin, a lifesaving drug that has long been a mainstay of diabetes treatment.

Pamela had an extraordinary career and carried it lightly.”

In "Secrets of Miss America," past winners Mallory Hagan, Savvy Shields Wolfe, and Betty Maxwell described the "anti-boyfriend" policies that were enacted by former CEO Sam Haskell, who resigned in 2017 after vulgar internal emails he wrote about past Miss America winners were leaked to the press. "It was made clear that Sam was in charge, and what he said went, and boyfriends were not allowed to exist when you're Miss America," she added. Mind you, “Jonah” will charm you anyway, and make you laugh. So will Jonah, the adorable day student (or is he?) whom Ana, our teenage heroine, meets at her boarding school (or does she?). The flirty, funny banter between the self-assured Ana (Gabby Beans, in a top-of-her-game performance) and the more broken-winged Jonah (a disarming Hagan Oliveras) is utterly adolescent, as is the way they occupy their bodies. They still have the flop-on-the-floor looseness of little kids, but it’s mixed with cheeky daring (mostly hers) and mortified caution (mostly his), because hormones and desire have entered the picture.

When Ms. Coombes, 41, sat down to eat very small portions, an interrogation broke out at the Thanksgiving table. “There was a lot of ‘Why aren’t you eating?’ or ‘Why isn’t there more on your plate?’” she said. That reality has sent many people who take Ozempic and similar drugs into preparation mode. Dr. Scott Hagan, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington who studies obesity, said patients ask him if they can skip doses of Ozempic or similar drugs before a food-focused event like Thanksgiving. He advises them not to, for a few reasons: For people with diabetes, missing a dose of Ozempic and then consuming a high-carb meal could lead to a blood sugar spike.

You Won’t Lose Weight on Ozempic Forever
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( Dani Blum | More About Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
But doctors say some people seek out these drugs to lose as much weight as possible — and are dismayed and disillusioned when they stop. When they do, they tend to regain the weight they lost. Medications like Ozempic mimic a naturally occurring hormone and slow the emptying of the stomach, so that we feel fuller, faster and for longer. In clinical trials of semaglutide, the compound in Ozempic and Wegovy, people with diabetes have tended to lose less weight, less quickly, than people who did not have the condition, Dr. Hagan said. A small proportion of those who take these drugs won’t lose weight at all, he added.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 2024 election promises to feature several major battlegrounds, but for sheer breadth of competitive contests, North Carolina next year will be hard to beat. Recent presidential contests in North Carolina have been close: In 2020, Donald Trump won North Carolina by about 74,000 votes out of more than 5.5 million cast. In other words, in 2024, North Carolina will be one of the centers of the political universe – important in part because it’s a uniquely competitive state. “North Carolina has proved to be a purple state, but not necessarily a swing state,” says Cooper, the political scientist. For the better part of two decades, Georgia, like North Carolina, had voted consistently Republican in key federal races – until 2020.

At one time, those tanks were a feature of “Operation Mincemeat,” a punchy, plucky, highly unlikely West End musical, which tells the even more unlikely story of an MI-5 escapade. “Part of the joy was that the crazy stuff was all true,” said Natasha Hodgson, a member of the theater collective SpitLip, which created the show. But there was so very much crazy stuff. They especially doubted the dummy Sherman tanks, which the Allies created to misdirect the Germans. “We had to take the truth out because it was too silly,” the composer Felix Hagan, another member of SpitLip said.

That’s particularly a concern for older adults, obesity medicine experts say. The more muscle someone over the age of 65 loses, the greater their risk of becoming frail or suffering a fracture or fall (which can be fatal in older adults). It is crucial for older adults to maintain muscle mass so that they can stay mobile and independent. Muscle mass naturally dwindles with age. Clinical trials on semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, have typically enrolled people in their 40s and 50s.

A collection of these issues would undoubtedly be my favorite book that no one has heard of. I’ve always wanted to know who made this zine, and if there are any issues I am missing, and if I could republish them. Because of some scheduling issues, the only free days to do the audiobook came at the end of July. The day I had to narrate the book’s central trauma landed on the actual day it had happened 24 years earlier. But the best form of creative expression that takes friendship as a central concern is rap music.

The American Medical Association voted to adopt a new policy on Tuesday encouraging doctors not to rely only on body mass index, a long-used but potentially misleading metric, when assessing weight and health. The policy officially recognizes the “historical harm” of B.M.I. is influential in the medical community, the new recommendation is just a suggestion to doctors, not a strict rule they must comply with. The association, one of the largest medical groups in the country, will now recommend that doctors not use B.M.I. alone to assess whether a patient is at a healthy weight.

North Carolina GOP Lt. Gov. The 2024 gubernatorial race could feature two major forces in North Carolina government — Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican Lt. Gov. "I'm running for governor because we the people of North Carolina need someone who understands us," he told his supporters. Roy Cooper has been an institution in North Carolina Democratic politics. North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell is already in the race, and former Rep. Mark Walker is expected to enter the contest soon.
The lawsuits say Walmart didn't accommodate the former employees, one who has Crohn's disease, and other, epilepsy. Crohn's disease is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in individuals' digestive tract. In early November 2016, Tucker went to the emergency room due to a "medical episode" and had to miss work, according to the lawsuit. Per the lawsuit, Walmart ignored those requests as well as subsequent ones, and did not excuse absences for further medical episodes. Per the non-profit Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, Crohn's disease does count as a disability under the ADA.
March 30 (Reuters) - Walmart Inc (WMT.N) was sued on Thursday by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency's second lawsuit this week accusing the largest U.S. retailer of discrimination against workers with disabilities. The lawsuit was filed three days after the EEOC sued Walmart for firing Adrian Tucker, a deli worker in a Statesville, North Carolina store, because she had too many "unauthorized" absences related to her Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition. Both lawsuits accused Walmart of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act, and sought back pay and punitive damages. The case is EEOC v Wal-Mart Stores East LP, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina, No.

One clear rule: You can't message other people or try to set up meetings for Fridays, Robb O'Hagan says. Exos, a coaching company that trains pro athletes and runs corporate wellness programs, will pilot a 4-day workweek in May. "At the end of the six months, we're committed to continuing with the four-day workweek unless there's such extreme negative results that we'd choose otherwise."

A passenger disturbance on a Southwest Airlines flight prompted its diversion to Little Rock, Arkansas, on Saturday on one of the year's busiest travel weekends. "The FBI is the primary federal agency authorized to investigate potential assault aboard aircraft violations," Hagan said by email. The exact nature of the disturbance on board the Columbus, Ohio-bound flight from Houston wasn't entirely revealed. The disturbance came amid one of the year's busiest travel weekends, when many Americans partook in Thanksgiving reunions following the end of pandemic isolation. On Monday, authorities alleged, a Utah man held a straight-edge razor near another passenger’s throat on a New York City-to-Salt Lake City flight.

Everything is on the table: from pitching adjustable rate mortgages to offering free pilates lessons and more. For example, in a 2-1 buydown scenario, the buyer's interest rate will be 2% below the contract rate during the first year. The adjustable rate mortgage makes a comebackThe use of adjustable rate mortgages (ARM) has also soared to a 14-year high, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. With these types of loans, the interest rate shifts periodically depending on where benchmark mortgage rates stand. He said he expects to see mortgage rates fall in as soon as six months.
